Before paying for a refurbished laptop, read the shop's whole warranty, ask what battery percentage the grade you are buying promises, and confirm whether the installed Windows comes licensed or is a trial version. When it arrives, measure the battery, run the manufacturer's diagnostic and check that the machine is not still tied to the company that used it before. Do it in the first few days, because an online purchase may qualify for a 10-day withdrawal period from receipt and the regulation gives as an example of goods that cannot be returned a computer used beyond its inspection. Prices by shop are on the laptops page. In Chile people call them "notebooks", and that is the word you will see in listings.

The checklist before and after buying

  1. Open the shop's warranty page and read all of it. Note the term, what it covers and what it excludes.
  2. Ask what battery percentage the grade you are buying promises.
  3. Ask whether Windows comes licensed or as a trial version.
  4. Look up the exact processor model in Microsoft's list of approved CPUs for Windows 11.
  5. Ask the seller to confirm the machine has no BIOS password, that it left Absolute and that it was deregistered from Windows Autopilot.
  6. Check that the listing and the receipt say the machine is used or refurbished.
  7. When it arrives, photograph the sealed package and the machine, and report any dents the same day.
  8. Turn it on with internet and watch whether an organisation's screen appears.
  9. Generate the battery report with powercfg /batteryreport.
  10. Run the manufacturer's diagnostic.
  11. Keep the box, packaging, receipt and warranty.

Grades change from shop to shop

There is no single scale. Mercado Libre Chile requires a grade attribute to enter its refurbished catalogue, with three values. Excelente means subtle signs of use and a screen with no marks or imperfections. Bueno means small signs of use and a screen with no marks or imperfections. Aceptable means noticeable signs of use and a screen with scratches. All three require more than 80% battery capacity. Every refurbished listing must also state a warranty, although we did not confirm the minimum.

Shops with their own sites use other words. Reuse Chile uses Reacondicionado, Open Box and "Con detalles", which in its handles corresponds to Grade B. BackOnline uses Grado A, Grado B and Open Box, only on Apple devices. Digitek uses Seminuevo, Open Box, Grado A, Grado B and Outlet. SmartDeal uses Reacondicionado, Open Box and Nuevo. Todo Geek uses Seminuevo, Reacondicionado and Open Box. We did not read those shops' grade definitions, so compare the battery percentage and the faults each grade allows, not the grade name.

The warranty is what the shop states

This is what the shops that may carry laptops stated on 30 September 2026. Confirm that the term applies to laptops on the offer you choose.

  • SmartDeal. 1 year, the same for new, open box and factory-refurbished products, and a 10-day trial. It sells notebooks, MacBooks and desktop computers.
  • Reuse Chile. 13 months on refurbished and open box items, and a 30-day trial.
  • Digitek. 6 months on phones and 3 months on other products. We did not confirm the specific term for laptops.
  • Todo Geek. 3 months on seminuevo, refurbished and open box items. It sells mostly new gaming gear and components.
  • DLphone. It sells laptops, but the warranty it publishes is 12 months for phones and we did not find the term for laptops.
  • Mercado Libre Chile. Each seller sets its own, and we did not read the minimum.

A shop's term is not the legal warranty. How they relate is in the rights section below.

Windows activated is not the same as Windows genuine

Microsoft explains that activation pairs the product key or digital entitlement with the device's hardware, and that it does not assess the authenticity of the copy or guarantee that the copy of Windows is genuine. Ask before paying whether Windows comes licensed or as a trial version, and add the cost of a licence if it is not included. We did not read what each Chilean shop says about the Windows licence on its laptops.

Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025. Microsoft offers a consumer Extended Security Updates programme that protects the machine until 12 October 2027; we did not confirm whether it is sold in Chile. Windows 11 requires TPM version 2.0 and a processor of 1 GHz or faster, with 2 or more cores, that appears on Microsoft's list of approved CPUs. Many old business laptops do not qualify. Look up the exact processor model on that list before buying.

The battery

Windows generates a battery report. Open the Command Prompt, type powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter. Windows saves the report as an HTML file. In the installed batteries section, compare the design capacity with the full charge capacity.

Dell publishes that a full charge capacity below 40% of the design capacity indicates a badly degraded battery that should be replaced. That threshold is far lower than Mercado Libre Chile's 80%, which is a platform rule and not the manufacturer's or the law's. Use as your reference the percentage the shop promised you in writing.

What the previous company may have left

Many refurbished laptops come from companies, and there are three locks the buyer cannot remove alone.

BIOS password. Lenovo says in the manual for its ThinkPad T14 and T16 that, if you forget the supervisor password, there is no service procedure to remove it. The system board has to be replaced by an authorised provider, with a charge for parts and service. Dell gives a release code to whoever contacts support with the error code and proof of ownership, and Dell says it is the only option for laptops. We could not read HP's page on this topic.

Absolute, formerly Computrace. Absolute says the component is built into the firmware on compatible devices and that, once activated, it reinstalls its software if it is removed. We could not read how a corporate customer releases a device, so ask the seller to confirm that the machine left Absolute.

Windows Autopilot. Microsoft says any device that permanently leaves an organisation must be deregistered from Autopilot, and that the organisation's administrator does it. The practical test is to turn the laptop on with internet and see whether an organisation's screen appears. If it does, the machine is still tied to it.

The manufacturer's diagnostic

HP publishes that its HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI tool runs outside the operating system and lets you separate hardware faults from those caused by Windows or other software. It is useful for testing the battery, memory and disk when the machine arrives. Look for your brand's tool and run it before the withdrawal period ends. The general checklist is in what to check when it arrives.

Your rights in Chile

Ley 19.496 sets six months from receipt to exercise the options in articles 19 and 20 when they apply (article 21). Article 14 may exclude those options for goods disclosed before purchase as used or refaccionado (repaired), without removing a warranty offered by the shop. The law does not use the word "reacondicionado" (refurbished), so whether that exception reaches your laptop depends on how the shop disclosed and sold it. Ask for the warranty in writing. Every Reacondi offer shows the warranty the shop states.

For an online purchase, article 3 bis letter b) may give you 10 days from receipt to withdraw without giving a reason, subject to exceptions. The period may extend to 90 days if the shop did not send you the written confirmation of the contract (article 12 A). You must return the original packaging elements in good condition, and before payment the shop must warn you, using the words "derecho a retracto", if it excludes this right. The law leaves out goods that by their nature cannot be returned, and Decreto 52 gives as an example a computer "utilizado más allá de su inspección" (used beyond its inspection). Check the laptop to confirm it works, run the diagnostic, and do not use it as your work machine or move your life onto it until you decide.

If the shop does not answer, complain to SERNAC online, at an office or on 800 700 100. The full route is in your rights when buying refurbished, and the signs of a fake device are in original or fake.
